aberhart… bring together Aberhart’s Hokianga church images and local stories on film.

Hokianga has a unique collection of churches found throughout its remote communities. They represent a unique architectural heritage strongly influenced by the meeting of two worlds; of the colonial settlers and Te Ao Maori. They uniquely belong to Hokianga.

They can appear majestic, peaceful, and sometimes desolate under Laurence Aberhart’s attentive eye. Indeed rich with memory and wairua, these churches represent deep expressions of commitment to spiritual faith, whanau, and community.

Boxed exhibitionVillage Arts is pleased to show this selection of Hokianga churches from Aberhart’s body of work. Presented alongside are three films on the stories of Hokianga churches made by local documentarians Clare Ward and Marg Morrow.

These two perspectives each recognise different values of the Hokianga churches and honour the people who made them and continue to care for them today.
